Are lactates on RP3 similar to on water rowing?
When coaches do lactates on stationary ergometers and target the training zones on the water are they doing it right? Is there a direct correlation from stationary ergometer rowing to on water rowing?
Let me ask you a question and maybe you can start questioning some of the work that it is been going on to determine water training intensities.
When you row on a stationary ergometer you don't move like on the water. You spend a lot of energy to stop your body mass to change direction at the catch and release. The way the muscles are involve during the drive and the recovery on an stationary ergometer and a dynamic ergometer are different.
Also let me question something else. If you row on the water or on the RP3, you spend almost all the energy on the drive, have a longer drive and use the recovery to rest. If you row on a stationary ergometer you row shorter, a lot more on the second part of the stroke and also you spend plenty of energy to slow down and accelerate your body mass. Also you work a lot more on the recovery. This means that you can row at higher rate and longer on a dymanic erg as on the water and I believe accumulate more lactate.
My opinion is that measurements on stationary ergometer cannot be used as they are for water training. RP3 measurements are very similar to on water rowing and should be used for water training.

Real leverage
Look at this picture and you will understand what leverage is. The rowers are pushing the footstretchers against the handle to accelerate the flyweel. The lower back is doing the job of fulcrum and the rower is coordinating how much is pushing the frame away as the handle comes and how much he is opening the legs, body swing and braking arms to generate the maximum speed on the flyweel.
Rowing is not about the rower but about the blade work. The blade moves the boat and the rower links the boat with the blade to push the boat away.
On the RP3 instead of pushing the boat away trough the blade connection, the rower is accelerating the flyweel that has the same effect.
The momentums, feel and coordination you can execute on RP3 are the closest to on water rowing you can find.

RP3 software
With this direct feedback they are getting at the moment information of their coordination and efficiency of the stroke. This is a very unique way of training the rowing stroke to perfection.
It is a revolution itself because you are getting real time direct feedback on how every technical change or adaptation really makes the boat faster or not.
It is not anymore about subjective changes but real changes. The software rewards good coordination as the boat and rewards with a better split.
For me the perfect rowing stroke gets developed on the RP3 and then you take it to the water. You can never get direct feedback real time on the water as you can on the RP3.
Also with the RP3 you can decide what is the best rigging for your boat finding out the best drag factor, drive time, recovery time, ratio and rate to execute your best 2km effort.
The RP3 with the use of software for the training of the coordinated rowing stroke it is a revolution itself.

Open letter to coaches interested on the new RP3
To start introducing RP3 I will say:
RP3 is fully manufactured in the Netherlands and designed and developed by the original inventor of Rowperfect, Cas Rekers. I helped him to develop RP3 over the last 2 years, beeing the testing person and developing the right adaptations on the development to make it feel as close as possible to the on water rowing feel.
a) RP3 simulates real rowing. This means that the rowing stroke with the change of direction of body mass at catch and release it is the same as on the water being able to develop the right timing at both ends for the change of direction and the right coordination of the body segments as we are moving our body mass to the bow and stern and the boat is coming at the same time under us.
b) The stationary erg with sliders doesn't replicate the real feeling because the bungees don't work the same way on water rowing works. The real rowing is the mass of the boat against the mass of the rower on the water with a drag. On the RP3 is the mass of the rower against the mass of the frame on a bar with some friction from the rollers.
c) The new RP3 has improved from his past model on: Footstretcher, seat, position of flyweel, Adjustment of bar height, handle, look, drag adaptation and many others.
d) The possibility to reward good coordinated rowing. Good coordinated rowing with lenght and good connection gets better splits on the RP3 as on the water. Bad rowing gets bad splits. This means that the rowing simulator by itself rewards good rowing. Also the software let's you get direct feedback every stroke of your power aplication. It is the best way to learn to move the way you are the most efficient and produce the most speed to the boat.
e) RP3 is a revolution on the rowing world. I coach a rower, Ursula Grobler, that has achieved a world record on the C2 always training on the RP3. Also she has won the HOC on the open single, NSR1, NSR2 and the World cup on the LW2x Olympic event. She has been the fastest rower on these races and she is also the only rower in the world that uses the RP3. Big coincidence.
I highly believe that any coach or rower will benefit a lot by using RP3.
RP3 will help the coach to:
- Teach the rowers to move correctly on land.
- Testing the 2km race with weight adjusted and the event you want. The test will last the same time as the real race on the water. Also the coach will get scores adjusted by the body weight of the rowers.
- Help the rowers understand the coordination required in rowing, the concept of leverage, fulcrum and acceleration.
